Highlights from the Hardwood

TCBL Opening Weekend written by Anne Decker

This year due to a growing number of teams Friday night games were introduced. The coaches and fans appeared to be geared up and ready to go. Highlighted games for the weekend were SOS VS CTK Jr. Girls, SMS VS St. Pat’s Sr. Girls, SGS VS SOS Sr. Boys and SMS VS CTK Sr. Boys.

 SOS/CTK Jr. Girls:

The first two quarters sailed by with tremendous passing and fast break lay ups. At the half SOS lead 22-6. As the second half began CTK went on a scoring roll with 2 three pointers to try to close the gap. CTK never gave up and played until the buzzer. Final score SOS 32-CTK 21. SOS

Coach Bowman was very proud of her team and commented that some of the girls have been together since second grade. She believes that this has helped truly helped build a team that knows how to work together.CTK Coach Muntz expressed that the opening day jitters are behind them. They are a team of determined hard working girls that have a great future ahead of them.

SMS/St. Pat’s Sr. Girls:

Tip off went to SMS. Both teams used the clock to set up and execute plays. Two minutes into the game the first basket was made by St. Pat’s. Five minutes into the game SMS got their first basket. At the end of the first quarter the score was SMS-4/St.Pat’s-10. In the second quarter both teams only scored 2 baskets leaving the score at 8-14 going into the half. SMS came back in the third to come within one however with seconds left St. Pat’s put up the ball for a basket making it 17-20. The last quarter was back and forth with both teams taking the lead. With a minute left St. Pat’s goes to the line due to a technical foul and sinks all of them. Final score SMS 26-St. Pat’s 33.

SMS Coach Goldberg explained that St. Pat’s played a good game and we look forward to playing them again later in the season.

St. Pat’s Coach Hudgins shared that they enjoy coming to SMS. He said that they knew this was going to be a tough game, but we shocked the world.

SGS/SOS Sr. Boys

As both teams walked on the court the fans could see that both squads we big. After two quarters filled with battling for the ball underneath SGS went up by 18 points. To start the second half the guys from both teams used the fast break successfully and hit some three-point shots however SGS kept the lead closing the quarter with 42-26 lead. SOS fought back during quarter four and gave SGS all they could handle but SGS held on to win. Final score SGS 50- SOS 38.

SGS Coach Ferreoll was very pleased with his team overall. He shared that they put together a great game and learned that in the end they need to learn how to put away games and stop cheap fouls. This game was a great confidence booster.

CTK/SMS Sr. Boys

The tip off went to CTK for a quick lay up. CTK utilized the clock well with passing plays. SMS boys worked diligently against a tall CTK team and only were down by 5 at the close of the first quarter. During the second quarter SMS shots just would not fall. CTK showed the crowd how fast breaks score quick points. Going into the half the point difference grew to 19 with CTK at 41 and SMS with 20. During the last two quarters the SMS boys never gave up. They worked hard to get the ball to their shooters and post players. Final score CTK 87-SMS 40.

CTK Coach Fant was impressed with all the fans this weekend. He saw a sense of fair play and camaraderie amongst the teams and everyone seemed to have fun; players and parents.

SMS Coach Dawley explained that the Friday night game was a lot of fun and all weekend there was a nice energy.
